Learn to Type Without Looking

  1. Don’t arch your wrists, keep them flat against the keyboard. If your keyboard has legs put them flat to help you.
  2. Have your monitor at eyelevel so you don’t crane your neck or slouch your back as you learn to type.                                                                    
  3. When you are just starting to learn to type, focus on using correct keystrokes. Even if it feels strange, it’s more important to be accurate. With practice comes speed.
  4. Walk before you run. Speed is good but don’t go faster than you feel comfortable with. You’ll just make mistakes that take longer to go back and correct.
  5. Little bumps on the “J” and the “F” key let you know where they are. As you learn to type, practice finding them without looking.
  6. Like practicing a sport you learn to type fastest with regular practice. Sitting down three or four times a week for half an hour or so is much better than packing it all into a several hour long stint once a week.
  7. When you are used to the arrangement of the keys, practice typing without looking at the keyboard. It’s much faster to let your fingers find their own way.
  8. Don’t correct mistakes right away. It only slows down your typing. Make all your corrections at the end. If you are typing continuously, you will learn to type faster not make so many mistakes in the first place.
  9. The internet can be a great source of games and software that can calculate your typing speed as you learn to type.
  10. A dedicated training course can help you learn to type at professional speeds when you are ready.
  11. If you can find a rhythm it makes typing feel natural. It can stop you from second guessing yourself about the location of keys which causes a lot of people make mistakes as they learn to type.
